Lady Gaga thanks Carole King for her music
Carole King's gift as a songwriter is all about connection - friends, lovers, strangers experiencing deep emotions not often exposed to each other.
Over the decades, King has made that connection with untold millions of fans. Some of those fans came out to honor the songwriter as MusiCares person of the year Friday night as part of the build up to Sunday's Grammy Awards. Among them, lifelong friend James Taylor, Gloria Estefan, Alicia Keys and Lady Gaga, who thanked King for getting her through some difficult years before she found fame as a songwriter herself.
Gaga told the crowd she used to lock herself in her father's man room as a high school student and listen to "You've Got a Friend" over and over.
"And I would crank up this song so loud," Gaga said as she sat at a white baby grand piano in the center of the room wearing steampunk sunglasses and a flowing white dress. "And I really believed so much, Carole, that you were my friend. So thank you so much for the way you sing right to us in your music."
Toward the end of the song, Gaga modified the lyrics: "You've got a friend, yes you do, Carole, I love you."
Lady Gaga earned the first of a handful of standing ovations at the annual event, a fundraiser benefiting The Recording Academy's musician-oriented charity.
A silent auction and other activities before the dinner and concert raised $5.5 million and the audience pushed that number higher before the singing started with a live auction that included $120,000 for a copy of King's landmark "Tapestry" album on vinyl with a set of lyrics handwritten by King. Zac Brown bought an Acura specially equipped in honor of the event for $70,000, and the car maker kicked in an extra $30,000 to the charity.
Estefan, a former MusiCares person of the year, sang "It's Too Late," and told the crowd "Tapestry" was "the No.1 most impactful" album she'd ever heard. Keys nailed "Natural Woman," a song most identified with Aretha Franklin, also modifying the lyrics at the end to pay tribute to King. And Train's Pat Monahan left the stage to serenade the 71-year-old singer-songwriter directly on "I Feel the Earth Move."
Many of the night's most interesting performances came from the pairing of artists. Album of the year nominee Sara Bareilles, Jason Mraz and Zac Brown joined together on a stripped-down "Beautiful." Will.I.Am was joined on stage by protege Leah McFall and added a rapped verse to King's "Love Makes the World." Miranda Lambert, Jennifer Nettles, Amy Grant and Martina McBride joined together in a medley of songs. King's daughter, Louise Goffin, and Jakob Dylan sang "Going Back." And Miguel and Kacey Musgraves dueted on "I'll Do My Crying in the Rain," a song King and Taylor performed together.
King also was in a collaborative mood. She brought a pair of Egyptian musicians on stage to add an Arabic flavor to "Home Again." Taylor joined her next, finishing the evening as a part of her band.
"As a songwriter my dream was always and still is to hear great singers perform my songs," King told the crowd. "It does not get any better than this folks."
Lady Gaga wears plunging gown to honour Carole King at music gala
The 27-year-old singer arrived on the red carpet at the Convention Center wearing a sexy white dress that showed off plenty of cleavage and her enviable figure.
The elegant gown niot only featured a short train and a cape, but also included an elaborate jewelled waist belt and a knee-high split.
Due the length of the dress and the long sleeves, it was no surprise that Gaga chose to wear something that was slashed right down the front.
Gaga accessorised the sexy number with a pair of silver metallic heels, white nails and kooky sunglasses as she posed for the cameras with her hand on her hip.
Her platinum blonde bob appeared to be a wig but looked just right with the white gown.
The 'Born Ths Way' singer was at the gala to honour US singer/songwriter Carole King - who had her first number one hit as a songwriter at the age of 18.
The 71-year-old star looked chuffed to have been recognised as MusiCares Person of the Year, and brought her two daughters along to share the occasion with her.
Other stars who turned out to support Carole and acknowledge her career included Yoko Ono, Aerosmith's Steven Tyler, Sharon and Ozzy Osbourne and Hollywood actor Tom Hanks.
Gaga was one of the guests who took to the stage to perform, and even thanked King for getting her through some difficult times before she found fame as a songwriter herself.
She told the crowd she used to lock herself in her father's man room as a high school student and listen to Carole's hit 'You've Got a Friend' over and over.
"And I would crank up this song so loud, and I really believed so much, Carole, that you were my friend. So thank you so much for the way you sing right to us in your music," she said as she sat at the piano.
Toward the end of the song, Gaga customised the lyrics, and sang: "You've got a friend, yes you do, Carole, I love you."
What will Kelly say? Lady Gaga gets cosy with Ozzy and Sharon Osbourne at ...
They recently made up after their long-running feud but we doubt Kelly O will want to see this PDA with her parents and former enemy
Ozzy clings onto Gaga - out of affection - not to stand up
How very lovely and showbiz, sweetie darlings. Lady Gaga, Ozzy Osbourne and his wife Sharon got all huggy during a pre- Grammys party.
The strange lady , who has just urged her fans to support troubled Justin Bieber's , looked genuinely delighted when Sharon introduced her to husband, Black Sabbath frontman Ozzy.
Both the O's then landed a smacker on either side of Gaga's head (either that or they were whispering sweet nothings in her ear) in a show of mutual appreciation.
Ozzy then cuddled up to her for his own pictures, which produced a snarl from mother monster - this is good. We think.
WireImage
The three stars of the dark side were attending the 2014 MusicCares Person of the Year event honouring Carole King when their encounter took place.
The last time we saw Gaga with Mrs O was during filming for X Factor when the Born This Way singer presented her with a cake for daughter Kelly's birthday.
The two gals had been involved in a long-running spat stemming from a row about bullying, which escalated when Kelly saw the picture of her mummy with the monster.
"Not to be ungrateful but why would you send me a birthday cake via my MOTHER in a country half the would away? #JustSendItToME #LoveNotWar [sic]," she Tweeted, followed by the hashtag: "#EatMyS**t."
WireImage
She went on (an on): ""StefaniStopIt!. You are so far behind you think you are first! I live for a Cause not for the #Applause!!!!!
And in one particularly poetic message, Kelly said: "I like desert, but I prefer the truth... it's sweeter.
"Let them eat cake' #MarieAntoinette."
But then had a change of mind , possibly after the torrent of hateful messages from Gaga's Little Monster nuts fans.
The next day she backtracked: ""@ladygaga I acted like a child last night. Just not into publicity stunts call me & we will end this like adults I dont want 2 fight anymore."
So these pictures will please her then, no? Hmmmm.

Lady Gaga's 'ARTPOP' album artwork censored for sale in China
Artwork and song titled have been sanitised for the Asian market
The censored version of Lady Gaga's album 'ARTPOP' available to Chinese fans has been revealed.
As of 2014, Gaga's music is no longer banned in China with the US pop star's latest album available for purchase. However, both the cover artwork of the album and its tracklist have been sanitised with the new version, via Amazon China, of the cover visible above.
As fans will note, the naked Gaga from the original is now wearing a pair of tights while the ball covering her modesty has increased in size to cover her chest. The song 'Sexxx Dreams' is now also known as 'X Dreams' Scroll down to see the original artwork.
Lady Gaga, along with Katy Perry, Beyoncé, Take That, is one of a group of artists to have had a ban on their songs lifted by the Chinese government for the first time since 2011 after they were deemed vulgar by the Chinese Ministry Of Culture and placed on a 'poor taste' blacklist. Around 100 songs ended up on the list in total.
Following the news that her ban had been lifted, the singer tweeted:
I'm so excited!!!! The Chinese Government Approved ARTPOP to be released in China with all 15 songs! Next I hope I can come to perform!

Justin Bieber DUI Arrest: Singer Gets Support from Scooter Braun and Lady Gaga
Courtesy of Wireimage
may be having a field day with Justin Bieber's Jan. 23 arrest, but not everyone in Hollywood is as quick to cast stones at the 19-year-old pop star. Less than 24 hours after the "Never Say Never" singer was arrested and charged with driving under the influence, operating a motor vehicle with an expired license and resisting arrest without violence in Miami, his manager voiced his support online.
"@justinbieber love you and i will act in the manner of someone who truly cares. that is all I have to say. thanks for all those concerned," Scooter Braun tweeted. He also posted a quote on his Instagram account that read, "What defines us is how well we rise after falling." The picture has since been deleted. Before the day was over, the music mogul, 32, tweeted, "Been a long day. Bottom line is we are defined by how we handle adversity. Be there when it counts. Love fully in good times and bad."
NEWS: Jimmy Fallon and Jimmy Kimmel mock Justin Bieber's arrest
Braun isn't the only person standing in Bieber's corner. also urged fans to rally behind the singer and his fans via her Little Monsters website. "Hey monsters. I know everyone today is taking about Justin's arrest and all sorts of words and judgments are happening on the Internet. Everyone is entitled to their own opinion, and to stand up for themselves, but I think we should be supportive of Beliebers," the 27-year-old pop princess wrote. "They deserve, just like any other fan, to feel strong for each other and Justin so they can continue to share the bond they have through music."

Ironically, Bieber's fans declared war on Gaga's Little Monsters in March 2012.
Bieber, who has been released from jail, has not yet replied to Braun or Gaga via his social media sites.

Mother Monster took time out from instructing her gazillions of followers to support Justin Bieber's fans following his DUI arrest
Full on golden glamazon
Lady Gaga looked a bit more Lady and a lot less Gaga as she wowed at an event in LA last night.
The ArtPop hitmaker hadn't used a mop for a wig and there wasn't even a Kermit stapled to her shoulders so this is all very unusual for the kooky popstar - and it's making us a teensy bit nervous.
Gaga glittered in a very swanky stunning gold gown as she attended An Evening with music mogul Arthur Fogel.
Obviously all that time spent becoming with Donatella Versace is having an effect because the only Gaga-esque flair was a few crystals stuck on her forehead.
As well as looking completely amazing, the Do What U Want singer also showed off her caring side earlier in the day when she encouraged her legion of Monsters to be supportive of Justin Bieber's fans in light of his arrest for drink driving.
Writing on her website, LittleMonsters.com, the Bad Romance singer said: "Hey monsters. I know everyone today is talking about Justin's arrest and all sorts of words and judgements are happening on the Internet.
"Everyone is entitled to their own opinion, and to stand up for themselves, but I think we should be supportive of Beliebers.

She is not renowned for her covered-up look. But Lady Gaga was clearly in serious mode as she dressed to impress for an evening with music promoter Arthur Fogel in Hollywood, California, on Thursday night, at the premiere of his Who the F**k is Arthur Fogel documentary, shortly after she urged her fans to support Justin Bieber. The 27-year-old singer took to her website on Thursday to ask her fans, who are known as Little Monsters, to give their support to the 19-year-old singer and his Belieber fans in the wake of his arrest for driving under the influence (DUI) and drag-racing in Miami, Florida, earlier that morning.
She wrote: 'Hey monsters. I know everyone today is taking about Justin's arrest and all sorts of words and judgements are happening on the Internet.
'Everyone is entitled to their own opinion, and to stand up for themselves, but I think we should be supportive of Beliebers.

Following her serious tweet, Gaga let her hair down, quite literally, by sporting an elegant look at the premiere, which took place at the Harmony Gold Preview House and Theater.
The blonde singer made sure she kept everything covered up as she wowed in a stunning long gold gown, and she accessorised her look with a matching clutch bag and bracelets. The Los Angeles-based event, which was hosted by EPIX, featured a screening of the documentary, in which he is showered with superlatives by his fellow music industry colleagues, including U2 frontman Bono, as they praise his global touring business. The Applause hitmaker wore her hair partly up, while some of her tresses hung down in huge wavy curls. She also sported three gold dots above each of her eyes and accentuated her lips with a slick of rosy red lipstick. Gaga, who is known for wearing outrageous flesh-flashing outfits, also showed her affectionate side as she cosied up to the man of the moment, Fogel, and planted a kiss on his cheek, much to the Canadian's delight.Fogel clutched a bottle of water as he posed with Gaga, and may have needed to the liquid to cool himself down following the embrace.
Meanwhile, Lady Gaga's infamous meat dress from the 2010 VMAs has been named the most controversial red carpet moment of all time in a new survey commissioned by Charles Worthington, the official hairstylist for the EE British Academy Film Awards.
Lady Gaga, Scooter Braun Support Bieber After Arrest

As we p, Miami Beach Police booked the Baby singer on suspicion of DUI, drag racing, driving with an expired licence and resisting arrest after he was caught speeding in a rented Lamborghini.
After receiving criticism online from the likes of Seth Rogen and former neighbour, NFL star Keyshawn Johnson, Lady G took to LittleMonsters.com to encourage her fans to trend the topic #MonstersSupportBeliebers on Twitter.
Gaga wrote: "Hey monsters. I know everyone today is taking about Justin's arrest and all sorts of words and judgements are happening on the Internet.

Lady Gaga wants her Little Monsters to support the Beliebers
While certain celebrities have been quick to Bieber bash following his arrest (Seth Rogen, we're looking at you), Lady Gaga has urged her Little Monsters to support Justin Bieber's fans.
The Born This Way singer wrote: "Hey monsters. I know everyone today is taking about Justin's arrest and all sorts of words and judgements are happening on the Internet. Everyone is entitled to their own opinion, and to stand up for themselves, but I think we should be supportive of Beliebers.

Meanwhile, the 19-year-old pop star's manager Scooter Braun has reached out to the singer with a heartfelt tweet for the first time since the singer's arrest in the early hours of Thursday morning.
The music manager, who discovered the singer in 2008, wrote on his official Twitter account: "@justinbieber love you and i will act in the manner of someone who truly cares. that is all I have to say. thanks for all those concerned."
Followed by another message a few hours later: "Been a long day. Bottom line is we are defined by how we handle adversity. Be there when it counts. Love fully in good times and bad."

The Baby singer was arrested by cops in Miami Beach, Florida during the early hours of Thursday morning.
He was held after racing a borrowed yellow super-car down a residential street and admitted to authorities he had been drinking alcohol, had taken anti-depressants and had been smoking marijuana all day.
Justin left jail after being bailed on charges which includes driving under the influence of alcohol, marijuana and prescription drugs.
Later on Thursday, the star appeared before a judge via video link who set his bail at $2,500.
That afternoon the Baby singer was seen leaving jail in a black outfit as he was greeted by screaming fans.

After he was escorted from the prison, Justin jumped up on to the roof of his chauffeur driven car and waved to his devotees while wearing a pair of dark shades.
As he was arrested during the early hours of Thursday, the singer told cops he had taken anti-depressants, drank a beer and was smoking marijuana all day.
Bieber was incoherent, had his hands in his pockets, was driving without a valid license and resisted arrest without violence, Miami Beach Police Chief Raymond Martinez told the Miami Herald.

The 19-year-old's entourage had reportedly used their cars to block traffic on Pine Tree Drive at 26th Street, a residential area, at 4:30am to create a drag strip for the young singer.
It's believed Bieber was driving a rented yellow super-car Lamborghini at the time with a female friend as a passenger.
In an unusual move, Miami Beach Police confirmed the arrest on Twitter.

Lady Gaga Resurrects 'Gagavision' In The Name Of Versace
Lady Gaga in 'Gagavision no. 45.'Photo: Lady Gaga's YouTube Page
If you're a longtime Little Monster, you'll remember the Gagavision videos Lady Gaga released weekly during 2008-2009. In 2011, after the release of Born This Way, Gaga resurrected the series for four episodes. And now, it's back yet again. Early this morning, Gaga dropped "Gagavision no. 45," which ~sorta~ documents her big weekend in Paris. I say sorta because "Mambo Italiano" is playing over the video and you can barely hear one word that is uttered. Whatever, though, right? Who cares about WORDS with there is #FASHUN to look at.
The first shot of the Gaga-edited video is Mother Monster deplaning a private jet, champagne bottle in hand, decked out in what I assume to be Versace. The sheer dress is pretty similar to one Gaga wore in her Versace ad and, TBH, it'd be pretty weird to wear a different designer to have a "Paris Atelier Versace Couture Weekend." Plus, those silver medusa heads are a dead giveaway.
Lady Gaga in 'Gagavision no. 45.'Photo: Lady Gaga's YouTube Page
Gaga then switches from a champagne bottle to a more demure fluted glass and ogles racks of Versace goods that have been pulled for her. Among them is the geometric print jumpsuit she wore earlier this week. There are a lot of beaded pieces on that rack that she has yet to wear, but I am sure we will see at one point. Maybe Versace Couture Weekend Part Deux?
Lady Gaga in 'Gagavision no. 45.'Photo: Lady Gaga's YouTube Page
Gaga then changes into a hooded, beaded, red dress, which she pairs with sunglasses (inside) and the champagne flute she's still holding. Her final move is announcing she's going to bed, which begs a few questions: does she sleep in that hooded dress? Wouldn't the beads press against her head? Is it a faux-pas to sleep in couture? Does she also hold her champagne glass while sleeping?
Considering that this video is labeled "Part 1," it seems preeeeetty likely that Gagavision will be back, at least for a little while. Watch the first part below!

Lady Gaga fights to keep ''highly sensitive'' court settlement to ex
According to her lawyer the documents would "inflict significant professional and competitive harm" if released
Lady Gaga in Paris last week
Chart-topper Lady Gaga is staying Poker Faced over her finances, asking a court to seal documents containing information over a settlement she reached with an ex boyfriend.
Four years ago ex boyfriend and former producer Rob Fusari claimed he was denied a 20per cent share of her royalties for hits such as Paparazzi, Beautiful, and Dirty, saying he co-wrote the tunes.
The $30.5million lawsuit, where Rob also said he helped create Stefani Germanotta's Lady Gaga image, was dropped in September 2010 and settlement details were sealed by the court.
According to Radar Gaga is worried that ANOTHER lawsuit involving Rob - this time filed by Wendy Starland over her image, will mean these sealed documents will be open - and - read out in open court.
Keeping up?
Gaga filed a motion on January 6, 2014 to re-seal portions of the proceedings.
Her attorney Sandra A. Crawshaw-Sparks in New Jersey said: "In 2010, Germanotta entered into a confidential settlement agreement with Rob Fusari and Rob Fusari Productions, resolving certain disputes, unrelated to the instant action, that had arisen between them," the documents read.
"These documents include highly sensitive financial information that could inflict significant professional and competitive harm upon Germanotta if disclosed."
Now Lady Gaga is just waiting for a judge's ruling.
5 pictures that prove Lady Gaga is morphing into Donatella Versace
As Lady Gaga and Donatella Versace posed together on the red carpet ahead of Versace's Paris couture show this week, it felt as though we were gazing into Gaga's future.
The peroxide pair have been growing closer over recent months, ever since Gaga was asked to front Versace's SS14 ad campaign and then referenced her favourite designer on her new album, Artpop, with the song 'Donatella'. But, these latest pictures suggest Lady Gaga is actually morphing into her fashion idol.
Not convinced? Here's 5 pictures that prove it.
1. Not only are they almost identical from the front, with that white-blonde hair, the scary black eyeliner and pursed lips...
